The club, which presently has a sum of 45 openings, was established 138 years back in 1878, at first with five gaps. It lies adjoining the Firth of Clyde. George Strath was named in 1881 as the club's first golf professional,[1] and together with 1882 Open boss Willie Fernie (golfer), planned the first course, growing it to 18 holes by 1888.[2] The two were helped by Charlie Hunter, greenskeeper of the neighboring Prestwick Golf Club, in Troon's developmental years.
